Indian Head Massage with Stephanie Hughes

Saturday 12th April 2025

9:45am-2:00pm

  • Circulation.

  • Promote relaxation.

  • Lower blood pressure.

  • Release tension and toxins so that you can share this therapy at home with your loved ones.

What's more, we will also touch upon self-massage and some acupressure points for your self-care toolbox for when you’re feeling stressed.

Participants will need to bring:

About Gail:

Gail Bryson is a textile, graphic and product designer. She specialises in simple and graphic prints that complement a wide range of home styles.

Trained at Edinburgh College of Art, she developed her design skills at The Conran Shop and The Nest before subsequently becoming co-founder and creative director of Bryson Loxley. Amongst her clients there are John Lewis and Jamie Oliver. She has also collaborated individually with other small independent businesses on a wide range of projects over the years.

Gail is a firm believer that good design will always last the test of time. Her products are designed to last both in design and manufacture, and are mainly all hand-printed and hand-sewn in London. Ultimately, her aim is to create things that can passed down through the generations, like the collection of linen she has inherited from her own family.

Colour also plays a big part in Gail’s work. Combinations are dreamed up from photographs taken on her travels and provide inspiration back in her studio.

Lampshade Making with Studio Zef

Lampshade Making with Studio Zef

During this masterclass, you will learn the art of block printing onto a cotton lampshade.

With a huge choice of blocks and paint colours you will be able to create a completely unique and beautiful pattern. We will provide 2D cut out lampshades to perfect your design on and a lampshade to practise on.

Printing on lampshades is harder than it looks, so we’ll make sure to give you lots of practice time! Once you feel confident enough and happy with your pattern, you’ll be ready to print onto the shade you will take home.

This technique can then be transferred onto linen shades, card shades, curtains, napkins, cushions, cards, wrapping paper; the list is endless. The final lampshade will come with a UK/EU fitting and is suitable for table/floor lamps.

You will leave this workshop with a 30cm empire lampshade which you will have printed your own pattern onto, using Studio Zef blocks.

£90 PER PERSON

Your ticket includes lunch and a snack from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, plus unlimited tea and coffee.

About Studio Zef

Studio Zef are designers of beautifully artistic, characterful and contemporary hand printed lampshades. Born due to a love of craft and home renovation on a budget, Grace Franks established Studio Zef at the start of 2023. Their block printed lampshades are carefully designed using confident patterns in thoughtful and stylish colours. Each design is hand drawn and carved to create lino blocks, then printed onto cotton shades in their Cotswolds studio.

“Our aim is to create harmonious, striking designs that complement and elevate the style of any interior. With sustainability at the forefront, all of our lampshades are made and printed in the UK and will last a lifetime, if not more. Plus, our packaging is all recycled and/or recyclable.”

Finding Balance From Within with Emma Garland & Lucie Platt

Friday 9th May

10am-2pm

Lunch, snacks and unlimited tea and coffee included.

Mindfulness, movement, breath and relaxation.

Life can be a challenge and sometimes unexpectedly so. We often find ourselves balancing many things: work and life, happiness and stress, relationships and time.

Finding that balance is a skill in itself and finding that balance in ourselves is key to health, happiness and longevity.

Senior Yoga Teachers, Lucie and Emma, are bringing you this very special Retreat Day Away at the magical Walled Garden School; giving you the space and time to explore and find your balance from within.

Yoga allows us to gain a greater awareness of our bodies and most importantly our needs. At stressful times we can surrender these needs for the sake of time and others' needs and often push down our bodies' signs and symptoms for our own needs.

In this special Retreat Day, we'll explore various postures to listen to our bodies' needs; gaining a greater awareness of finding that balance between effort and peace.

Yoga is a fantastic tool for helping us understand and listen to what we actually need.

£50 per person.

A Celebration of Summer Wildlife with David Winnard

A Celebration of Summer Wildlife with David Winnard

Sunday 17th August
10am-1pm

Breakfast pastry and unlimited tea and coffee included.

Join us for a pleasant stroll through the grounds of the historic Hawarden Estate to encounter a variety of interesting wild species that call Hawarden home. From birds and insects to plants and mammals, we will seek out some of the wonderful wildlife of the summer months.

On this walk we will see how different species fit into the landscape and the overall ecosystem, from understanding how a single flower species can be host to a variety of insects and fungi, to looking for evidence of what birds have been breeding.

Whilst this walk does not focus on one particular group of wildlife, it allows us to follow nature’s lead; if we find an interesting butterfly we will look at that, if we see some signs of mammals, we will work out what they were, if we discover a new wildflower for the estate then we will appreciate that. We let nature dictate what we discover (with a little help and instruction from your friendly nature guide, David).

This is the kind of walk where you set off not knowing what you may discover and come back with an experience of seeing nature in all its glory, at a beautiful time of year, in a stunning setting.

£45 per person.

Timings

10am: Meet at The Terrace in The Walled Garden

Late Summer Foraging with David Winnard

Sunday 31st August
10am-1pm

Breakfast pastry and unlimited tea and coffee included.

The flowers, fruits and fungi of Hawarden Estate.

This is the perfect time of the year to get to grips with the edible, medicinal and poisonous plants found on the estate.

If you are new to foraging, or know a little bit, then this walk will be perfect for you as we discuss the dos and don’ts of foraging (including what the law is) as well as delving into identifying some of the commoner plants and maybe some fungi that are present in the hedgerows and woods.

Expect to be finding fruits like blackberries and apples and nuts like hazelnuts and sweet chestnut, among the huge variety of other plants that have so much folklore behind them (like Mugwort - a favourite of your nature guide, David).

Not only will we learn how to identify these species but also discuss ways of how to preserve them, whether that is drying them or doing something more involved like turning our finds in to liqueurs.

We will forage in some of the wilder parts of the estate as well as look around some of the more formal bits of garden - not for the cultivated plants, but for some of the more interesting ‘weeds’ which often have many uses (just don’t tell the gardeners we are looking at their ‘weeds’!).

You will leave feeling confident to find and pick your own foraged plants from the wild.

£45 per person.

Nurture in Nature: Finding Your Inner Strength with Emma Garland

Nurture in Nature: Finding Your Inner Strength with Emma Garland

Friday 14th March 2025

9:30am-2:00pm

Lunch, snacks and unlimited tea and coffee included.

This wellbeing yoga day is focused on tuning into our inner strength; inner strength within our body.

We’ll try to access some of those more underused muscles in the body to help you feel stronger, taller and more confident in your body and posture. You’ll finish the session feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and, most importantly, deeply relaxed.

You’ll gain knowledge and discover tools that actually work for you in terms of finding your inner strength. .

The day will work towards finding a deep relaxation within our bodies, allowing us to check out of our minds.

Gaining greater awareness of our bodies to find inner strength.

As we age, aches and pains can start to creep up on us. Often we’ll put it down to old age and carry on! But most aches and tightness/tension within the body is muscular which means you can do something about it.

This session is suitable for everyone, including beginners; with guided instructions and techniques to help you switch on some of those smaller, underused muscles within the body and start to ease some of the muscular pain you may experience.

We work with the breath and provide a deeper feeling of engagement and resistance within your body to build heat and strength in the body without necessarily moving fast.

In colder months, we can typically retreat indoors. However, time spent outdoors in nature can be a great way to boost the mind and body, as well as the nervous and immune system.

Experiencing natural sunlight can boost your mood and productivity.

Join us for a day away in the magical space that is The Walled Garden School. Surrounded by nature in ancient woodland, this space will take you a world away from it all.

We’ll finish the day seated at a big table within the Walled Garden, with a hearty, warming, delicious vegetarian lunch provided by the award-winning Hawarden Farm Shop.

Suitable for all - seasoned yogis and also beginners completely new to yoga.

£45 per person.

Timings

9:45am: Meet, greet, walk and breathe through The Walled Garden.

In this restorative day for yourself; and maybe friends or loved ones, we’ll start the day with a hot drink, before heading off for a walk around the beautiful Walled Garden. We’ll take a walk up to the Old Castle, where we’ll enjoy some various breath work techniques, designed to warm us up from the outside in; whilst enjoying the breathtaking rural views from the top of the of hill. It’s an opportunity to discuss old habits and perhaps plant seeds for new habits to grow.

11am: Move, breathe and flow.

We’ll head back to roll out our yoga mats indoors, in the new Conservatory space at The Walled Garden School, whilst still feeling connected with the natural world.

We’ll enjoy flowing movement to expand our bodies and hearts. When we expand and open our chest, we can fully feel our inner power within. Our posture is greatly improved and we can allow ourselves to feel the finer muscles within our bodies that may need to be awakened.

12:30pm: Relaxation

We’ll cosy up under thick wool blankets and hot water bottles and be guided through a deep relaxation for the ultimate experience in self-care. These are the tools you can use to take with you to create new habits and routines to help you find a more balanced nervous system.

1pm: Refuel

Lunch from the award-winning Hawarden Estate Farm Shop is included. We’ll round up our restorative day with a hearty, warming lunch to fuel our bodies and minds and chat with like-minded new friends.

2pm: Time to say goodbye

All equipment, food and and drink throughout the day is provided.

What you will take away:

Your own sharpened tools and the skills to keep them that way!

What to bring with you:

Your own tools for sharpening.

Enthusiasm for sharp tools.

The desire to learn a new skill.

£90 PER PERSON

Your ticket includes lunch and a snack from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, plus unlimited tea and coffee.

About the workshop, as told by Gaz:

Are you harbouring a desire to be able to sharpen your own tools? Does it feel within your reach but still somehow completely unfathomable?

As a professional knife sharpening service we speak with our customers about this topic a lot, so much so we've lost count of how many times we've heard...

"I'd really like to be able to sharpen my own knives/tools but I'm worried about ruining them."

"I've had a whetstone for years but I've never got around to learning how to use it."

"I'm not really sure about the angles."

...and these are absolutely valid reasons for being wary of getting started, properly sharpening tools using traditional methods can be tricky, but by breaking down the process and giving you a little guidance along the way, we're confident you'll leave the workshop with the skills you need become a competent and confident home sharpener.

We’ll start the workshop with a lesson in the all important sharpening theory, then we’ll give a comprehensive demonstration of the techniques you’ll need to know before moving on to a big chunk of time for you to sharpen your own tools under our guidance.

About The Plucky Pickle

Jules Goddard, aka The Plucky Pickle, has been fermenting and preserving for over 30 years and has taught well over 1,000 people at her events. After a career in hosting renewable energy conferences and global events for companies such as Informa and Thomson Reuters, Jules turned her passion for fermenting into a small business in Manchester, producing ferments for delis/restaurants and teaching masterclasses to the public and hospitality industry.

The Trees of Hawarden Estate with David Winnard

The Trees of Hawarden Estate with David Winnard

If you have ever wondered how you identify a birch from a beech or an oak from a sycamore then this will be a great place to start.

Hawarden Estate is home to some stunning trees, with a wonderful selection of native trees as well as some interesting specimens from all corners of the globe. Our walk around the grounds will encounter many of these fascinating plants and we will explore some of the mythology and folklore around some of the species as well as delve into how to identify some of our more common species.

We will explore how other species interact with trees, like fungi and lichens, as well as take in the reasons why some cultures have a strong relationship with Yew Trees, why Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread, why burning Elder wood may not be wisest of ideas and why Ash trees are having a really hard time at the moment.

Whilst many people think you need to see the leaves of a tree to identify them, it just isn’t the case, with the leaves off the trees in winter you get to see more of their form and use other identification features such as bark, buds and habit to get to know them.

Our walk around the grounds of this historic and beautiful estate will leave you with a new appreciation of trees as well as seeing some of the best examples of some species in this part of North Wales.

£30 PER PERSON

A snack from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop is included.

About David Winnard

David Winnard created Discover the Wild whose background in wildlife started when he was 5. David gained first class honours degree in wildlife photography before starting Discover the Wild, where his aim is to share his passion for identifying species and to help people forage safely and sustainable for wild foods.

He is one of the most respected foragers and naturalists in the North of England and Wales, having worked with and for organisations including the BBC, RSPB, Lancashire Wildlife Trust, City of Trees, Groundwork, Brockholes as well as many local councils, groups and organisations. He also works closely with a number of gin companies helping them use wild plants and fungi in their drinks.

Reset and Rebalance with Emma Garland

Friday 17th January 2025
9:30am-2:00pm
Lunch, snacks and unlimited tea and coffee included.

Start the New Year by reconnecting with your body alongside a true expert at this warm and friendly day for seasoned yogis and beginners completely new to yoga. This is a day of knowledge and learning; a restful, restorative day allowing you to reconnect with yourself and with nature.

As your guide, Emma Garland puts it:

“Our body speaks to us all the time, but with busy lives we don’t always listen. We’re not always in tune or even in sync with our bodies. Stress and worries of the mind show up in the body, too. And certain times of the year don’t always help either.

Whether we hold tension in our muscles, like our back, shoulders and hips; or it shows up in our work or daily tasks with an inability to focus on the task in hand; we need the tools to learn new habits or even unlearn old, bad habits.”

Reset your nervous system to manage stress more effectively:

“We’ll be looking to rest and rebalance our nervous systems, both our parasympathetic nervous system (the chilled one) and the sympathetic nervous system (the action one).

When we can find this balance, we can increase our heart rate variability (HRV) (AKA our heart health) and decrease our resting heart rate (RHR).

Balancing these two will improve your overall health, increase our longevity and result in a balanced, and better, nervous system.”

Timings

9:45am: Meet, greet, walk and breathe through The Walled Garden.

In this restorative day for yourself; and maybe friends or loved ones, we’ll start the day with a hot drink around the fire pit, before heading off for a walk around the beautiful Walled Garden of Hawarden Estate. We’ll take this walk up to the Old Castle, where we’ll enjoy some various breath work techniques, designed to warm us up from the outside in; whilst enjoying the breathtaking rural views from the top of the hill. It’s an opportunity to discuss old habits and perhaps plant seeds for new habits to grow.

11am: Move, breathe and flow.

We’ll head back to roll out our yoga mats (indoors) whilst still feeling connected with the natural world. We’ll enjoy flowing movement to expand our bodies and hearts. When we expand and open our chest, we can fully feel our inner power within. Our posture is greatly improved and we can allow ourselves to feel the finer muscles within our bodies that may need to be awakened.

12:15pm: Relaxation

We’ll cosy up under thick wool blankets and hot water bottles and be guided through a deep relaxation for the ultimate experience in self-care. These are the tools you can use to take with you to create new habits and routines to help you find a more balanced nervous system.

1pm: Refuel

Lunch from the award-winning Hawarden Estate Farm Shop is included. We’ll round up our restorative day with a hearty, warming lunch to fuel our bodies and minds and chat with like-minded new friends.

2pm: Time to say goodbye

All equipment, food and and drink throughout the day is provided.
